Mash Partners: National Holocaust Centre and Museum

April 16, 2025

The National Holocaust Museum is the only dedicated Holocaust Museum in the UK, that works with people aged 9 and above. The Museum was founded by James and Stephen Smith whose visit to Isreal in 1991 changed the way they looked at history and the Holocaust.  Opened to the public in 1995, the museum is considered today to be a memorial, a place of testimony and a centre of learning communities for all faiths across the UK.

The Journey Exhibition

The museum’s Journey exhibition is Europe’s first and only Holocaust exhibit aimed specifically at primary school children. It is completely immersive. This exhibition follows the story of Leo, a fictional German-Jewish boy living in 1938 Berlin. His story explores life as a Jewish person living in Nazi occupied territory, through the lens of a child. Its focus is on the Kindertransport, and life in the lead up to the outbreak of war.

Educational Resources

Alongside the re-design of the Journey exhibition to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz we have worked with the museum’s Education Team to create bespoke resources to support their onsite visits. As our newest Mash Partner, we have worked together to create pre and post visit workshops to help teachers prepare pupils for a visit by introducing topics and subjects covered at the museum and to build on learning outside the classroom.

NHC Resources

Thank you Purple Mash team for the work that has gone into creating these resources. From an education point of view, these sessions will support students in their learning with us onsite as well as encourage them to reflect on the day they spent at the museum. The themes the children learn about with us are so essential and important, it is brilliant that Purple Mash are supporting us in delivering these messages and ensuring that they are remembered even after the students get back on the bus to travel back to school.
