The Sport Premium was first introduced to improve the provision of physical education and school sport across primary schools in England. The money is allocated directly to schools and is ringfenced meaning that it can only be spent on improving the provision of sport and PE in schools. Schools receive two separate payments as part of the Sport Premium funding, with one received in the autumn term and one in the summer.
Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the physical education (PE), physical activity and sport for the benefit of all primary-aged pupils to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.
