Promoting Reading with Purple Mash

We love to celebrate books, and foster a joy of reading for pleasure in children. There are some great resources for you to use in your classrooms to promote reading from 2Simple, including eBooks, paint projects, writing projects and quizzes.

Encouraging Reading for Pleasure with Purple Mash Library

Purple Mash Library is an online library for reading and comprehension which is available to all Purple Mash users. The vast collection of titles (over 250!) are designed to inspire children to develop a love of reading and become better readers, and tap into children's growing interest in digital media.

Home access is a key part of Purple Mash Library, providing all children - regardless of background - with a growing library of books they can read for pleasure away from school.

There is also a selection of non-fiction books from DK Learning - perfect for encouraging reluctant readers to 'Go All In' as apart of the National Year of Reading.

5 Classroom Activities to Promote Reading

1. Activities Linked to Popular Classroom Texts

Within Purple Mash you can find resources based on popular classroom books - these include character fact files, news reports based on story events, quizzes, diaries, character descriptions and even more!

2. Write Author Factfiles

If you’re wanting to do some research on top authors, then we’ve got just the resources for you. From Hans Christian Anderson and Charles Dickens to Julia Donaldson and Roald Dahl, we’ve got shelf-loads of well-known writers for your class to get inspired in our Authors and Poets area. You'll be able to write profiles and book reviews, as well as completing activities on the authors' books.

3. Create an Animated Story

Children can use 2Create a Story to retell a book they have read. They can animate their story and add sound effects.

4. Start a Book Review Podcast

Why not use 2Cast to review books that your class have read? Children could write their review using this template, and then record them in 2Cast, adding sound effects and intro music.

5. Explore Non-Fiction Texts

Sometimes there's nothing children like better than to find out interesting facts, and with Purple Mash, they'll have lots of facts at their fingertips! As well as the full DK Learning books in the Purple Mash Library, there are also shorter DK Learning texts in Purple Mash.
