Easily Teach Grammar with Purple Mash

April 28, 2026

For many teachers, the level of technical detail needed to teach grammar now vastly exceeds what they themselves were taught when they were at school, leaving them feeling overwhelmed and underconfident. This is why we've created the Grammar for Writing Scheme - a complete scheme of work which offers clear progression from Year 1 to Year 6.

Whether you're a subject specialist or need lessons for a supply teacher stepping into an unfamiliar year group, the scheme gives all staff the confidence to teach each National Curriculum grammar concept clearly and effectively. Concepts are broken down through easy-to-follow teaching slideshows and reinforced with interactive activities in Purple Mash. It's fully mapped to the National Curriculum and can be used flexibly in standalone lessons or to enhance your existing English planning and schemes of work.

What's included in the Purple Mash Grammar for Writing Scheme?

The Grammar for Writing Scheme is available to all staff users of Purple Mash, and is found in the Teachers Area. Each unit in the scheme includes:

  • A teaching slideshow
  • Three online activities
  • A printable worksheet
  • A short writing task

All of these resources are included as part of a Purple Mash subscription. Non-subscribers can try the platform with a free trial.

Clear, Child-Friendly Grammar Teaching Slides

The teaching slides have been designed to be engaging for children without creating cognitive overload.

Most of the grammar concepts are taught within the context of fictional characters who live in the community of Riverdale Springs, and there are step-by-step explanations with colour-coded examples.

The learning has been made as interactive as possible, with practice activities - which can be completed on mini whiteboards, or as part of a group discussion - and additional opportunities to develop oracy skills through talk partner tasks.

Grammar for Writing - Writing Activities

Grammar instruction will improve writing only if pupils apply what they have been taught to their writing.

- The Writing Framework, July 2025

As part of the teaching slides, there is a short, scaffolded writing activity, where the pupils will write about themselves using the grammar concept they have just learned. All writing activities have been designed to help teachers and pupils prepare for the Curriculum and Assessment Review Final Report's proposed changes to the Key Stage 2 GPS SATs paper.

Interactive Online Activities to Develop Grammar

Each unit includes three online activities which can be completed as a class, or set as 2Dos for independent work.

They are automatically marked, with scores tracked in the Data Dashboard - particularly useful when there is the need to revise grammar concepts in the run up to the SATs.

Printable Grammar Worksheets

Also included in each grammar unit is a printable worksheet - a great way to continue lessons when devices are unavailable. Alternatively, these can be set as a 2Do and completed within the PDF annotator within Purple Mash.

  2. Worksheets can be printed to use in the lesson (especially if there are no devices available), or sent home.
