Python in Pieces is an interactive coding environment, designed for Secondary Schools to enable teachers to confidently teach the Python language while fostering independent learning and giving hands-on experience for students.

In this blog we have hear from two of the developers of the program, where they discuss what Python in Pieces is, and how it supports computing in Secondary schools.

On 16th May, Ofsted published their research review into the computing curriculum, to identify factors that can contribute to high-quality school computing curriculums, assessment, pedagogy and systems. We've taken a close look at the report and identified how Purple Mash meets each of those factors, and throughout this week we're posting a series of blog posts outlining exactly how it does this. Each daily blog will cover 2-3 of the factors in depth, looking at what the report says and highlighting where Purple Mash supports them.

Today, we start by looking at teacher technical and pedagogical content knowledge of computing, as well as the curriculum structure: called the pillars of progression within this report.

At Tenby Schools Penang, Purple Mash is doing more than supporting lessons, it’s helping unite two curricula under one shared approach to teaching and learning. With a 1:1 iPad programme in place, the focus isn’t on the technology itself, but on how it enables creativity, collaboration, and deeper thinking across both the international and national schools.

Rather than a rigid rollout, staff were given the freedom to explore the platform first and the result was immediate buy-in. Today, Purple Mash is embedded across different subjects and year groups, with pupils using it daily to plan, create, code, and communicate their ideas.

The impact? More connected teaching, more personalised learning, and a platform that supports the school’s wider mission to develop confident, curious learners.
